PAL Technologies Ltd: Clinical Tools for Patient-centred Health Monitoring
Correlations between physical behaviours and chronic disease to help inform treatment interventions and chronic disease risk

Background
PAL Technologies is an award-winning company providing clinical tools for the patient-centred measurement of free-living, everyday activities and behaviour, providing researchers and clinicians with robust evidence for treatment interventions and disease-related risks.
Based on more than 25 years of R&D across a range of patient groups, PAL’s miniaturised single sensor platform technology also benefits from recent developments in advanced Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).
Since its spin-out from the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde in 2001, PAL Technologies has been providing support from its Glasgow headquarters to more than 200 institutions worldwide. Many of these researchers, spread across almost 50 countries, are investigating the correlation between physical behaviours and chronic disease.
Technology Overview
The core technology behind the PAL family of products has been developed and refined over several years in both patient groups and unimpaired subject populations. Many researchers and clinicians are using PAL’s technologies to investigate the correlation between physical behaviours and chronic disease to help inform treatment interventions and chronic disease risk.
PAL Technologies’ product, The activPAL, is a miniature electronic logger designed to quantify free-living daily activities. The device contains a microprocessor, sensing element, recording element, associated electronics and power supply. The microprocessor controls the processing and recording of the sensor signal and the communication with a host PC. In its standard configuration, the activPAL makes measurements of position every 20th of a second. This raw acceleration data is packaged and stored memory allowing recording durations of up to fourteen days (typical wear time is seven days) and the additional recording capacity allows flexibility for postal distribution and subject wear compliance.
